Pattee, P. A. (Ohio State University, Columbus) and J. N. Baldwin. Transduction of resistance to chlortetracycline and novobiocin in Staphylococcus aureus. J. Bacteriol. 82: 875-881. 1961.-Using phage 80 of the International Typing Series propagated on appropriate strains of Staphylococcus aureus, resistance to chlortetracycline and novobiocin and the capacity to produce penicillinase were transduced to a number of antibiotic-sensitive recipient strains of S. aureus. The frequency of transduction varied from 1 to 10 transductants per 10(7) phage particles employed. Lysogenization of the transductants by the transducing phage did not occur. Phages 29, 52A, 79, and 53 of the International Typing Series were also capable of transduction, while phages 42B and 81 were unable to participate under the conditions used. The recipient strains were either resistant or susceptible to lysis by the transducing phages, but this did not influence the transduction frequencies. Lysis of transductants susceptible to the transducing phages was inhibited by preparing the selective medium with brain heart infusion agar. Linked transductions were not detected. With few exceptions, all of the recipient strains were susceptible to lysis by phages of group I or phage 81 or both. Strains susceptible to lysis by phages of groups II and III, but resistant to lysis by phages of group I or phage 81, were not transduced.

متن کاملBacteriophage-mediated acquisition of antibiotic resistance by Staphylococcus aureus type 88.
Antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains of phage type 88, lysogenic for phage 188, when grown in mixed culture with a nonlysogenic novobiocin-resistant strain, acquired novobiocin resistance at a high rate from the nonlysogenic strain. With most strains of phage type 88, there was no detectable transfer of resistance from lysogenic to nonlysogenic cells. Lysogenization with phage 188...
متن کاملDevelopment of resistance to novobiocin, tetracycline, and a novobiocin-tetracycline combination in Staphylococcus aureus populations.
The antibiotic sensitivity of the individual organisms of a bacterial population was determined to study the comparative rates of development of resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to novobiocin, tetracycline, and to a combination of these antibiotics. Serial subculture of S. aureus with the combination of novobiocin-tetracycline (N-T 2.5:1; the ratio in serum of patients dosed with Panalba) sh...

متن کاملAccumulation of mutations in both gyrB and parE genes is associated with high-level resistance to novobiocin in Staphylococcus aureus.
Coumarin-resistant mutants of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated by three-step selection with novobiocin at different concentrations. Sequencing analysis of the gyrB and parE genes of the first-, second-, and third-step mutants revealed that successive point mutations first occurred specifically in the gyrB gene, followed by a point mutation in the parE gene and then an additional point mutati...
